Loneliness is a natural emotional response to social isolation, but when it becomes pervasive or persistent, it can detrimentally affect your daily life, connections with others, and even your overall well-being.
Sometimes you just need someone to talk to, that’s why we’re here. There’s no pressure and you can explore at your own pace.
Loneliness is a global issue. In Australia, across various age groups, people report experiencing feelings of loneliness at different points in their lives. In fact, 1 in 5 Australians/New Zealanders report that they often feel very lonely, with almost 50% saying they have felt lonely in the past week.
In a world buzzing with connections, it's ironic how we can still find ourselves feeling isolated.
Feeling isolated and lonely can be a heavy burden, especially when you're navigating the complexities of life. You're not alone in feeling this way, and reaching out for support is the first step to a better place. Loneliness is a shared human experience, and gradually, step by step, you will be able to build connections and find your way with the people around you. Here are some ideas to help you on your way.
Acknowledging the Emptiness Loneliness isn't a sign of weakness; it's a human experience. We all feel it at some point. It's crucial to acknowledge those moments when you feel disconnected, recognising that it's okay to feel lonely.
Seeking Shared Spaces Connection often starts with shared interests. Join clubs, groups, or activities aligned with your passions. Whether it's a book club, a fitness class, or a local community event, shared experiences forge bonds with others.
Quality over Quantity It's not about the number of connections, but the depth. Seek out quality relationships where you feel seen, heard, and valued. A few genuine connections can be more fulfilling than a sea of acquaintances.
Small Steps Matter Building connections takes time. Start with small steps, whether it's attending a social event, initiating a conversation, or joining an online community. Progress happens one step at a time.
Cultivating Gratitude Amidst the loneliness, find the silver linings. Practice gratitude for the connections you do have, for the lessons learned, and for the opportunity to grow through the experience.
Remember, building connections takes time, and it's okay to take it one step at a time. You're not defined by your current feelings, and with patience and effort, you can foster connections that bring fulfilment and joy to your life. You matter, and your journey is unique – embrace it.
Have you ever tried talking to God about how you feel?
You can talk to God at any time and anywhere. You can start talking to God like he's there right beside you. Talking out loud can really help*. You can speak this out loud to God now…
“Dear God, I’m struggling at the moment. I need help because I feel alone and disconnected. Can you guide me on what I can do to change my circumstances and the way that I am feeling. Can you please show me that you are real and open my heart and my mind so that I can know you, Amen”
Amen means ‘let it be done’.
* If you can’t talk out loud that’s ok, you can talk to God silently (he can know your thoughts)
